Ref.EG26-28      EUGENE GRASSET (1841 – 1917)

Eugène-Samual Grasset, born in Lausanne (Switzerland), spent most of his life in Paris and is rated among the leading Art Nouveau artists. He first studied architecture at the Zürich Polytechnic. In 1871 he established himself as draughtsman and designer in Paris. As a versatile and competent poster designer, illustrator of books, he was able to assimilate Japanese and Persian influences, and his architectural background enabled him to create what was to become a design bible for artists of the Art Nouveau period for his ornamental plant decorations: La Plante et ses Applications Ornamentales, published in 1897. This was a folio sized volume comprising seventy-two colour plats designed by himself and executed by his senior students. We are pleased to offer three plates of this sought-after work.
